Sculpture, Design, Concepts

A multi functional seat & side table developed in 2023 through a research project with University of Arts London as part of the Bio Inspired Design course. This piece has been developed to minimise material usage and construction techniques whilst retaining a voluminous sculptural form. The seat is handmade using left over recycled plastic sheet material and simple wooden rods. There are no nuts, bolts or glue holding the elements together, yet the assembly which follows the principles of layered & cellular structures, found in nature, is extremely strong.

Bio Inspired Design

Jo developed a new material for Adidas using their own recycled rubber shoe waste. The material is a solid surface material suitable for high traffic environments as well as being a fun & colourful modern design. The material was cast into large slabs which were used by &New to make custom benches for the Adidas flagship store on Oxford Street, London.

Jää Series

Made in collaboration with Mirka Gröhn for &New, the Jää collection is made using sheets of recycled post consumer plastic waste. The sheets are cut into forms and threaded onto long steel poles and interspaced with beautifully engineered aluminium spacers. The Jää bench won the prestigious Wallpaper* design award for Best Use of Material 2021. &New went on to make bespoke Jää benches for the Royal Botanical Gardens Edinburgh for The United Nations Climate Change Conference COP26.
